The Young Faculty Research Fellowship (YFRF) 2025 is a prestigious research award offered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, under its flagship Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics & IT. Designed to retain and attract bright young faculty members in the ESDM (Electronics System Design & Manufacturing) and IT/ITES sectors, this fellowship provides substantial financial support directly on top of your existing salary — no tradeoffs, no salary cuts.

If you are a PhD-holding faculty member working in electronics or IT with a strong publication record, this is one of the most rewarding government research fellowships available to you in 2025.

What Is the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme?

The Young Faculty Research Fellowship is a component of the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme for Electronics & IT, launched by MeitY in 2014 with Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approval and a total outlay of ₹466 crore. The scheme was named after the legendary engineer-statesman Sir M. Visvesvaraya and was designed to close India's PhD gap in the critical ESDM and IT/ITES sectors.

Phase II of the scheme expanded the YFRF component to support 50 Young Faculty Research Fellowships at 10 awards per year, with the explicit goal of retaining talented, research-active faculty within India's academic ecosystem rather than losing them to the private sector or foreign universities.

Apart from YFRF, the Visvesvaraya scheme also covers Full-Time PhD fellowships, Part-Time PhD fellowships, and Post-Doctoral Fellowships — making it one of the most comprehensive research support programmes run by any Indian ministry. You can browse all active research fellowships on ProjectSarthi to compare your options.

Financial Benefits — What You Actually Get

One of the standout features of the YFRF is that the fellowship amount is additive — it does not replace your salary. Here is a clear breakdown:

  • Monthly Research Fellowship: ₹20,000/month paid in addition to your regular salary or income from the institution.
  • Annual Contingency/Research Grant: ₹5,00,000 per year for a maximum of 5 years. This covers equipment, manpower, consumables, conference travel (national and international), software, and other research expenses.
  • Total annual financial support: Up to ₹7,40,000 (₹2.4 lakh monthly + ₹5 lakh contingency).

The contingency grant is specifically structured to allow genuine research spending — including presenting papers at national and international conferences, which is crucial for building your academic profile.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the Young Faculty Research Fellowship 2025, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Age: Below 40 years of age at the time of application submission.
  • Qualification: Must hold a first-class PhD degree from a recognized university, in a field relevant to ESDM or IT/ITES sectors.
  • Employment: Must have a regular position in an academic or research institution (or be in a position that is on a regular scale and leads to a regular position).
  • Research Track Record: Must have a proven track record evidenced through research publications and recognitions. This is a key evaluation criterion — a thin publication record will be a disadvantage.
  • PhD Guidance (Preferred): Applicants who are already guiding PhD students under the Visvesvaraya PhD Scheme or any other GoI scheme will be given preference.
  • No Concurrent Fellowship: If you are currently availing any other fellowship, you will have to opt for only one. You cannot hold this YFRF alongside another fellowship simultaneously.
  • One Lifetime Application: A candidate can apply only once in their career under this scheme.

How the Nomination Process Works

Unlike most fellowships where you apply directly, the YFRF follows an institution-driven nomination model. This is important to understand before you start preparing:

  1. MeitY/DIC invites proposals from eligible institutions periodically (typically once a year).
  2. Each eligible institution can nominate one faculty member per award round.
  3. The Academic Committee constituted by MeitY reviews nominations and makes selections based on merit and eligibility.
  4. If selected, the research must be conducted exclusively at the nominating institution — the fellowship is non-transferable.

This means your first step is to speak with your institution's research cell or Nodal Officer about upcoming call notifications from MeitY/DIC.

How to Apply — Step by Step

  1. Visit the official application portal at phd.dic.gov.in.
  2. Register on the portal and fill in the required details.
  3. Wait for your institution to be notified by the PhD Cell, DIC, MeitY about the call for applications.
  4. Download and print the application form from the institution's website.
  5. Fill in all mandatory fields and attach self-attested copies of required documents.
  6. Email the completed form to your institution's Nodal Officer with the subject line: "Visvesvaraya Application of [Your Name]".
  7. The institution will then submit the nomination to MeitY after internal selection.

Required Documents

  • PhD degree certificate (first class)
  • Academic transcripts and mark sheets
  • List of research publications and citations
  • Proof of regular employment at the nominating institution
  • Research proposal with clear objectives, outcomes, and deliverables
  • Any recognitions, awards, or honours in research (strengthens your case)
  • Declaration that you are not availing any other concurrent fellowship

Selection Process

Selection is merit-based and evaluated by an Academic Committee constituted by MeitY. The committee assesses the quality and relevance of your research proposal, the strength of your publication record, and your potential to contribute to India's ESDM/IT/ITES research ecosystem. Each institution is limited to one nomination per call, so institutional endorsement is itself a competitive filter. The fellowship is awarded for an initial period of 2 years, with annual performance reviews determining extension up to a maximum of 5 years.

Is YFRF Right for You?

The YFRF makes sense for you if: you are a young faculty member below 40, hold a PhD in electronics or IT, have active research publications, and want to fund your research without leaving your current position. The ₹5 lakh/year contingency grant alone can significantly accelerate your research output — covering conference travel, equipment, and lab consumables that institutions often struggle to fund.

However, keep these limitations in mind. Only 10 awards are given nationally each year, competition is stiff, and the nomination comes through your institution — not directly from you. Building a strong relationship with your research cell and having a compelling, well-scoped proposal will be critical.

If you are a postdoctoral researcher rather than a regular faculty member, consider the AICTE Post-Doctoral Fellowship (₹65,000/month) or the CSIR Nehru Science Postdoctoral Fellowship (₹80,000/month) as alternatives. You can also compare multiple fellowships side by side on ProjectSarthi.
