Taiwan Scholarship 2026 is a government-funded study abroad scholarship by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, for international students.

The Taiwan Scholarship, primarily funded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), is a prestigious, merit-based, partially or fully-funded fellowship program for international students. It provides monthly stipends (NT$15,000–33,000+), tuition, and fee waivers to study at Taiwanese universities for undergraduate, master’s, or PhD programs, fostering academic exchange.

What is the Taiwan Scholarship?

The Taiwan Scholarship, also known as the MOE Taiwan Scholarship, is an international degree scholarship offered by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Republic of China (Taiwan) for outstanding foreign students who wish to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programmes at accredited universities and colleges in Taiwan.

This scholarship is designed to support international students by providing tuition assistance and a monthly living allowance. For Indian students planning to study abroad in Asia, it is one of the notable government-supported study opportunities because it can significantly reduce the financial burden of higher education in Taiwan.

Taiwan is known for its strong higher education ecosystem, especially in fields such as engineering, information technology, management, natural sciences, social sciences, public policy, and language studies. The Taiwan Scholarship helps students access these academic opportunities while receiving official financial support from the Taiwanese government.

Scholarship Duration

The duration of the Taiwan Scholarship depends on the level of study:

  • Bachelor’s degree: Up to 4 years
  • Master’s degree: Up to 2 years
  • Doctoral degree: Up to 4 years

However, the maximum total period for which a student may receive the Taiwan Scholarship across degree levels is generally 5 years.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Taiwan Scholarship 2026, applicants should broadly meet the following conditions:

  • Must be a foreign national and not a Taiwanese national.
  • Must possess at least a secondary school graduation certificate for undergraduate study, or the relevant previous degree for master’s/doctoral study.
  • Must have an excellent academic record.
  • Must be of good moral character.
  • Must apply separately to a recognized university or college in Taiwan within that institution’s admission deadline.

Who is generally not eligible?

  • Applicants whose Taiwan Scholarship or MOE Huayu Enrichment Scholarship was previously revoked
  • Applicants receiving another scholarship or subsidy from a Taiwan government institution or a Taiwanese educational institution, except limited fee-gap support allowed by rules

Language Requirements

The language requirement depends on the medium of instruction of the course:

  • For programmes not fully taught in English: applicants are generally expected to provide TOCFL Level 3 or above, subject to the local Taiwan Representative Office’s rules.
  • For programmes fully taught in English: the local Taiwan Representative Office may require TOEFL, IELTS, or another recognized English proficiency qualification, or equivalent documentary proof accepted under local rules.

If the chosen programme is claimed to be fully taught in English, applicants may also need proof from the university confirming this status where required.

For Indian Students: Important Submission Note

Indian applicants fall under the jurisdiction of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC). The Taiwan Scholarship portal indicates that the application window for India is open from 1 February 2026 to 31 March 2026. Selection Process

The final selection is handled through the Taiwan Representative Office and the scholarship authorities in accordance with MOE guidelines. In general, applicants are assessed on the basis of:

  • Academic performance
  • Quality of study plan or research proposal
  • Language ability
  • Overall suitability and future potential

As per the scholarship directions, the local Taiwan Representative Office may also conduct interviews in person or by video conference to better assess the applicant.

Applicants should remember that receiving the scholarship is separate from university admission. In practice, both scholarship eligibility and university admission matter for final enrolment.

Important Points to Remember

  • You must apply separately to a Taiwanese university; the scholarship alone does not automatically secure admission.
  • The scholarship is for degree study; applicants should not assume that unrelated preparatory support is automatically included unless specifically notified.
  • The application form and submitted documents are generally not returned.
  • If any document is found to be false, altered, or misleading, the scholarship can be revoked.
  • Students who violate scholarship rules after enrolment may face suspension or cancellation of the scholarship.
