What is the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship (CSSS)?

The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students (CSSS), also referred to under PM-USP, is a merit-cum-means scholarship implemented by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India since 2008. Professional Courses: Professional and technical courses such as engineering, medicine, law, management and integrated programmes may also be covered, subject to the official scheme rules and duration norms.

How CSSS Scholarships Are Distributed

The total number of fresh scholarships is distributed among State Education Boards based on the population in the 18–25 age group, while separately accounting for the shares of national boards like CBSE and CISCE.

Within a Board’s allocation, scholarships are distributed among the streams in the ratio of 3:3:1 for Humanities, Science, and Commerce. The scheme also follows reservation norms, including allocation for SC, ST and OBC candidates, and horizontal reservation for students with benchmark disabilities. Fifty percent of scholarships are earmarked for girls.
